Searching for Sea Life
Andy and I had a plan – find whales, sharks, sea bass and giant bait balls – Heading out with Outcast sport fishing into the open ocean, the mission was clear, find sea life and expect anything. The weather out here was to be expected from an early morning of fog hanging over the shifting horizon, burning off toward the evening as the sun silhouetted the rocky shoreline of Catalina Island. Although, we were here to experience and document sea life, the spear gun I gripped close to my chest was for pure peace of mind due to some recent sightings of sharks. Perhaps, a mere presumptuous precaution, I felt the wake of the beasts lurking somewhere deep down here in this field of long and vine-like kelp that found itself engulfing me in a swirling current of activity. The world down here was indeed alive. There was indeed one giant sea bass floating effortlessly along the underwater tide. I followed as far as my air could take me, hoping to find the rest of its pack, but instead greeted with smaller fish that followed me like curious children eager to place such a foreign beast such as I. Until next time, the deep awaits.
